My mother-in-law is a great dahlia aficionado. She mailed me a box of dahlia tubers all the way across the country from her home on Vancouver Island in the Spring. I lovingly cared for them all Summer long, giving them daily maintenance in an effort at coaxing the glorious blooms out of the dull tubers. When Autumn rolled around, I picked a bouquet of the best blooms and entered them into the Roseneath Fall Fair. To my surprise they received the 1st place ribbon! I was delighted as my blooms were certainly not the biggest. I am a great supporter of organic gardening. The other blooms were fed Miracle Grow to reach astronomic proportions. I suppose the judges appreciated the form and variety of my bouquet. The prize comes with clout, a ribbon and some cash. Competitive gardening continues to be my favourite side-hustle.
